Not On YOUR Terms

And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.
-John 6:65-69 (KJV)

One thing I've noticed, lately, is that many people don't like challenges any longer. Challenges are looked upon negatively, and many people run away, instead of meeting the challenge head on. I think it goes in all walks of life, including the church. That, I believe, is the idea behind this section of Scripture. In John 6, we read that Jesus fed 5000 people with just a few fish and a few loaves of bread. We read that Jesus went alone to pray, then walked to the boat the disciples were in, a few miles off shore, during a storm. Then, Jesus gives some tough teaching, and many deserted Him. This brings us to our reading for today.

John 6:65 says, "And he said, therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father." What Jesus is pointing to here is this: we can't come to Him on our terms. We live in a society that is that lives, work, and does on our terms, what we want, when we want it. We must come to Jesus on His terms, when He calls. In John6:26-31, we see Jesus telling the crowds that they must do the work of God, which is believing in Jesus as the Messiah. The crowd wanted a sign to prove that He was, indeed, the Messiah. They wanted their terms met. As a result, verse 66 says, "From that time many of His disciples went back, and walked no more with Him." That is true of so many "Christians" today, when God doesn't act on their terms, they flee and turn on their faith.

Friends, as we prepare to start a new week, are you trying to make God act on your terms? Are you trying to live the Christian life on your terms? Instead of acting on your terms, why not try living according to God's terms?
